From Office Support to Field Service Technician: Building a Career at General Parts
By Aaron Thompson – Branch Manager, Fort Wayne
Careers in the foodservice equipment service industry can begin in unexpected places. At General Parts, we believe growth happens when people receive the opportunity, support, and training needed to succeed.
This is the story of Amanda’s transition from Service Support Specialist to Field Service Technician in just four months—a journey built on teamwork, determination, and professional development.
Discovering a New Career Path
During a branch team meeting, we discussed hiring a new Foodservice Equipment Service Technician. Shortly afterward, Amanda approached me with an important question:
“Do you think I could become a Service Technician?”
The answer was simple—yes.
Amanda had already demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, customer service experience, and attention to detail while working in our warehouse and parts operation. She also enjoyed hands-on work outside of the office, including metalsmithing classes, which showed she had the technical mindset needed for the field.
Starting the Field Service Technician Journey
After discussing the opportunity with leadership, we developed a six-month trial program to help Amanda transition into a technician role.
The plan included:
- Two days per week training in the field with experienced technicians
- Continuing her office responsibilities during the transition
- Completing online manufacturer training outside of work
- Developing technical skills through hands-on learning
Amanda officially began field training on June 6th, 2022.
Learning Hands-On Technical Skills
Throughout the training process, Amanda worked closely with experienced technicians to build her confidence and technical abilities.
She focused heavily on:
- Electrical troubleshooting
- Understanding equipment operation
- Learning proper service procedures
To support her progress, we provided:
- An electrical meter for training
- CFESA study materials
- Work shirts and technician gear
- Tools donated by technicians and team members
The support from the Fort Wayne team played a major role in her success.
CFESA Technician Training Opportunity
In October, Amanda received the opportunity to attend CFESA new technician training in South Carolina.
The experience accelerated her development and strengthened her confidence in the field.
When she returned from training, it became clear she was ready for the next step in her career.
On October 31st, 2022, Amanda officially became a General Parts Field Service Technician.
Why Technician Training and Support Matter
Transitioning into a foodservice equipment service technician career requires dedication, training, and support.
Amanda balanced:
- Warehouse responsibilities
- Field training
- Independent studying after work
Her success demonstrates what can happen when motivated individuals receive the right opportunities and mentorship.
