How General Parts Group Supports Career Field Service Technicians

By Bryan Orlenko – Recruiter

Field Service Technician’ is a widely used job title, but what does that mean apart from the obvious? There are thousands of industries that require technicians to keep them operational and they are served by thousands of different types of service companies. Service companies are all very unique. Some service a single piece of equipment, but those similar to us, in the foodservice equipment repair industry, service 100’s of different types of equipment.

Why does this matter? Well, we cannot speak for other industries, but what we know for sure is that being a technician in the foodservice equipment repair industry takes serious dedication and above all, training. No two days are the same. The variety of equipment to fix is staggering, from simple manual mechanical devices to extremely complex combination ovens. Technicians need skills in electrics, electronics, gas, steam, and refrigeration.

The Importance of Foodservice Equipment Technicians

This level of dedication is a great fit for career-minded people, with the career being the key word. That is how we at General Parts think of this role – a career, not just a job. We understand that careers take time to build and the fuel to build a career is experience, and just as importantly, training. General Parts technicians are offered a variety of training including ride-a-longs, manufacturer schools, and CFESA trade certifications. On top of this, the company also supports colleagues who wish to continue or finish their formal education at a college, trade school, or university, with a tuition reimbursement program.

This program has been used by people entering the industry and existing team members. It applies to educational programs that are related to the work of the individual, and it is open to all employees who are in good standing with General Parts and have been with the company for at least six months, regardless of their position in the company. The company’s contribution is up to $5,250 per year (with a lifetime limit of $26,250), the employee’s commitment is passing with a B or better and zero payback if the individual works for the company for 2 years following completion of the educational coursework.
